Small Steps Create Big Shifts
Confidence isn't built through small, comfortable steps. It’s built on the bones of discomfort. It begins with the decision that feels far bigger than you're ready for. For me, it was buying a one way plane ticket. I wasn't ready. I didn't have a perfect plan. I wasn't even sure I was making the right decision. But that single choice changed the entire course of my life.
Looking back, I don't think confidence comes before the leap. I think confidence is built because of it. Every time we do something that scares us, we gather evidence that we're more capable than we thought. Not because everything goes perfectly, but because we learn we can handle uncertainty, adapt, and keep moving forward.
Some decisions change everything. Sometimes it's buying the ticket. Sometimes it's ending the relationship. Sometimes it's moving across the country or starting over completely. The common thread isn't confidence. It's willingness. Most of us don't feel ready when we make the decisions that shape our lives. We make them because something inside us knows that staying where we are is no longer an option. Bravery is not the absence of fear, but the choice to walk forward with it.
The confidence we build is the result of pushing ourselves outside of our comfort zone.
I’ll be the first to admit that the route I took was a bit impulsive. If doing something like that sounds terrifying, I get it. You don’t need to dive head first into solo travel. There are plenty of other paths you can take that will help you build up the courage and the confidence to take the big step. Take yourself on a solo date night. But don’t bury your head in your phone. Bring a book, sit at the bar and strike up a conversation with your neighbor. Just something to get your toes wet. Then, take a day trip to the next town over. Walk around a bit, grab a pastry from the bakery, go to a museum.
Even the small steps will create big shifts.
